Seeing the Unseen – Development of Ideas (Pitch + Major Task)
Development of Ideas
Noticing is something that is diverse – it can be categorised into many different elements. Some of the ideas I brainstormed were:
- finished/unfinished
- attentive noticing
- old media (eg: film photography)
- connected psychologically
- ‘mundane activities’
- the everyday
- travel
- local
- the process of change
- the process of growth
- social media
- development
- relationships
- routine
- familiar places
- relationships
- a process
- re-reading/re-watching
- local gems
- lines
- hidden away
- unhabitable
- unnoticed/uncovered
- hidden bars/restaurants
- small talk
- breakfast, lunch and dinner
- mannerisms
- listening/attentive listening
- different opinions
- repetitive ideas
From this list – the ideas that I am thinking of exploring further for my final task are:
- listening/attentive listening
- mannerisms
- hidden away
- lines
- re-reading/re-watching
- routine
- finished/unfinished
these ideas could include:
- taking photos at a certain time of day, every day for a week
- documenting travel or myki balance every day of the week – how much travel does one actually do?
- observing certain things in the melbourne CBD (for example lines, a certain colour, coffee etc.)
noticing a number of people drinking coffee in the cbd
sitting at a coffee shop from opening till closing and noticing the people around you
The Idea
From these ideas above – I would like to observe more about the surroundings of Melbourne and the interactions between everyday life. Not only does one usually overlook these mundane activities that process and action in the everyday life of individuals. For example, one does usually not process certain ideas or thoughts, because they are something they do in their everyday life. Travel is something that is often not really thought about unless traveling to a new place. The people, sounds, atmosphere and general feel of travel are often excitement – but quickly turns to the familiar of the everyday. For example, I take the number 19 tram every day to get into the university from my house. For me, this fifteen-minute tram trip is something that I am not really used to ‘noticing’ on because I have done it countless times over the last six months.
This idea about noticing the surroundings that I am in has been attentive to my learning in Seeing the Unseen – being able to develop a notion of attentive noticing and learning has helped me shaped my media making in this way. From this course, I have not only focused on the details of smaller things and ideas from my media making + development but how this can shape the audience or view of my piece. Things like non-narrative structures, the study of movement, noticing patterns and categorical documentaries are something that I have taken more notice and constructively about since starting documenting my media-making progress through this course. I hope to develop my ideas in the endeavor of making media that is both poignant but effective in letting the reader decipher the meaning on their own.
Furthermore, for my final project after the week eight brainstorming session – I have honed in on wanting to develop the concept of how people interpret media in certain things. For this, I want to develop wide angle photography shots – so individuals can pick up on smaller ideas. From there, I will examine what people notice from the photographs and reflect upon the ideas in which are presented.
