“Privacy: Why Do Youth Share So Publicly” and “How to be a Media Practitioner”
For this week’s reading (week six), we focused on the areas of privacy, particularly online. The reading, titled “Privacy: Why do youth share so publicly?”. I found this an interesting concept because generally, it tends to be an easy statement to make that the ‘youth of today share every detail online’. This reading, however, offered many alternatives to sharing online in the public sphere. It labels the “public but private sector’ where individuals choose what they post online. So, in the end, it’s not as bad as the older generations make it out to be.
This weeks lectorial started off with a talk from Paul Richards, who explains his ideas and lessons in being a media practitioner – this talk was mostly theory based (for example, talking about release forms and the safe way of shooting) rather than a more ‘practical’ theory which I found interesting. I had no idea that you had to sign so many release forms before shooting! We also watched an interesting video called “clown train”, within this, we spoke about dynamic shooting (ie: getting interesting shots) and lateral thinking. The second half of the lecture was some focusing on Project Brief Three – the interview. We watched three very different interviews, my favourite being the interview of the student’s younger brother (Oscar). I thought the camera angles, vocals and pictures were all strong – really representing his character, you could really get a sense of who he was as a twelve-year-old.
This lecture has gotten me excited about my own PB3 piece and how I can shoot it!
