City. Of CnC.
Time to check out the less formal Korsakow films. Well I don’t know what defines a ‘formal’ K-film. When I say formal I refer to the composition of the piece. This one titled “A City of Contrast and Contradiction”. Unlike “Love”, the several videos that comprise the overall piece are scattered and less geometric.
The theme is quite clear cut. Every video in the piece is set in Melbourne. This is apparent to me because I recognise all the areas and there are train station signs. The music is slightly eerie but loops, fading into the background and not working in unison with the visuals. The artist conveys the theme well and it is easily interpreted. In terms of the title I think the idea of transportation vs. buildings pop up, other ideas that spring to mind are moving vs. still, art and plain. I use the “vs.” because the artist mentions the word contrast, contradiction. I don’t really see where the contradiction comes in, maybe they just chucked it in for alliteration. I like this piece because the theme is consistent, their composition isn’t jarring at all, the music doesn’t really add effect but it doesn’t take away any either.
So far the K-Films I’ve seen are interesting. It’s not like a linear structure. I think perhaps that was their intention. It’s exciting because it highlights how meaningful otherwise insignificant, 5-10 second videos of nothing can be roped together to create a bigger entity. Like a Megazord. Some of the K-Films I’ve seen are super abstract and if not for the title of the film I would have been lost. It challenges and entertains, it’s interactive and interpretive. Looking forward to working with these things.
