Unlecture, Week 1: Introduction

A huddle of students are gathered outside a lecture theatre, and between the general buzzed chit-chat typical of a first week back from a semester break, there seems to be one question common across everyone’s lips: “What’s ‘Networked Media’?”

Some are sharing bits of wisdom passed down from the elder Professional Communication kids, while the more resourceful ones have already studied the course guide back-to-front. However, no-one could be prepared for the lecture waiting for us inside. In fact, it wasn’t even a lecture, but an ‘unlecture’.

The key message to takeaway from this introduction to Networked Media? Forget the last 12 years of your education.

No more rote learning. No more memorising essays and churning them out in inhumane exam conditions. No more ‘doing’. It’s all about the ‘how’. In terms of how a semester of this course will unfold? Time will tell.
