Today marked the beginning of our final project for media 1; a group assignment which asks of us to ‘produce a media artefact which creatively responds to a conceptual idea central to Media as an academic discipline’.
Righto then.
Whilst it took some time for me to wrap my head around the task at hand, I at the very least was able to meet my two partners and crime and choose our concept at random. Daniel, Ariff and I have been assigned audiences as a concept, and today discussed some of the possibilities that this idea presented to us.
Daniel and I had come straight out of year 12, which meant our heads were filled with the various theories that we had studied the year prior. Talks of these and a few of the different ideas that were common to them were discussed in a brief conversation, but the discussion was largely lead by a few questions that I raised about the audience in order to get some in-depth discussion going.
- How does an audience engage or interact with the media or a particular text?
- Is this engagement unique to a demographic/location, or can we consider the audience as a global concept?
- How does the media influence an audience, if it does?
- How does an audience influence the media, if it does?
These lead to some interesting ideas presented by Ariff, a Malaysian born student who moved to Melbourne to study. He spoke largely about Malaysian culture and the differences in comparison to Australia he had taken note of in his short time here.
We did not have time to continue these discussions in detail though, as much of our remaining efforts had to lie in the creation of the collaborative contract, which I wrote up as we each pitched ideas for each point. Very early on it was made clear that communication would be key for us in this project, so phone numbers, emails, google docs and even facebook accounts were shared before we walked out the door.
Time run short before this was completed, but a meeting was organised for next week to finish the remaining requirements for this.
