For project brief 2, I decided to take a similar approach to the video aspect as I did with the first project brief – keep it simple. I decided to film my travels in a standard day in going to uni, a trivial task which seems to take up a lot of my time.
My aim was to have only short shots lasting up to two or three seconds for a fast paced video with a very definite beat to it. I feel I was successful in this area, and was able to match the shots up in an interesting way to communicate this. I planned to create some simple music to add to this to make the product more engaging, but due to time constraints, left the original audio from the videos in. This change had quite a different effect to what I initially planned. This is by no means a bad thing, but this change makes the cuts more harsh and abrupt, something I could have spent more time focusing on, overlapping audio to prevent this. Although it’s fine for this project, I will have to keep this in mind in the future.
The change from using music to using the audio from the video files themselves also affected my use of treated audio added in the editing process, as I was going to place sounds over the video shots and images. For example, the image of RMIT was planned to have audio of the street accompanying it, but due to poor planning and one corrupt SD card, this did not come to fruition. I personally do not like the use of images in my project brief, as I planned to do more with them, but did not reach this initial goal. I settled on somewhat uninspired narration over these images after meeting time constraints.
In the future, more careful planning of how to treat each element of the task both individually and together will be necessary to succeed in all areas of the brief.
