Media Self-Portrait

‘People are complex. They can be funny and also serious, intellectual but also silly, charismatic and nonetheless foolish. People can be all these things and more, and I am no different. I drift in and out of these personalities, knowing that who I am is only how I present myself in that moment.’

My aim for this task was to show different sides of me in each medium. The video aspects were supposed to be low-key, trivial tasks like getting ready in the morning or waiting for a bus that I would have to do every day. I used the photographic images to show a wider variety of things, showing my hobbies or interests. I have photos I took whilst hiking and from a trip the beach, these memories having sentimental value to me. There is also an image of my workplace, the Werribee Football Club, a very important aspect of my life that is repeated in an audio piece, with me answering a phone in the office. The final image is an older one from a dress rehearsal of a play I performed in a number of years ago. I wanted to present this dramatic, expressive side of me that my close friends would see, but very rarely anyone else. The final audio piece was recorded whilst waiting for a class, with the conversation turning to the topic of me moving away from home. I felt like it was a nice personal touch at the end, which also hints at my family life.

I was raised as a lover of films, becoming enamoured with worlds presented on the silver screen in 'Star Wars' and 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' before I had even entered Kindergarten. This is what first got me interested in pursuing media studies, but I hope to expand my knowledge beyond film through what RMIT can teach me.
