What a strange lecture, both tedious and intriguing as we were introduced to the world of copyright in Australia and also to the idea of travelling abroad, by two different speakers. For the first 20-30 minutes, I was given insight into the Copyright laws of Australia, complicated and confusing to me as I can’t help but feel frustrated about asking for permission to use every bit of footage. At the same time, I can understand how necessary protecting work is, as I wouldn’t want someone misusing my work. Some interesting points were picked up, as copyright is automatic in Australia compared to America and no c symbol or registration is needed. Material can be purchased for use at times, or used freely in some circumstances. Ideas are not protected by copyright, and neither are facts.

Now for the intriguing part, in which a lecturer from the uni spoke to us about travelling abroad. She had travelled to many different places around the world and experienced many things, picking up useful footage and creating documentaries etc. along the way. She described herself as somewhat introverted, similar to me at times, and that throwing herself in a new culture and meeting new people really changed her. This speech hit a spot within me, as I feel I have not thrown myself in the deep end yet or had any defining moments in my life. Is it time to throw myself out there? The thought excites me, but at the same time frightens me: this is perhaps a good thing. We listened to some audio footage, and were able to hear some of the things experienced and learned. This opened my eyes to the fact that media is everywhere, and can be anywhere you want it to be. Being able to capture an amazing moment and share it with others can be such an inspiring feeling.
