After my exercise last week I received some great feedback from Robin, which I just want look at a little bit and point out all that he mentioned that I specifically want to let influence my next task.
The first comment I would like to reply to is about the psychological framing of a scene by which Robin was commenting on of my scenes noting, “I don’t know that it is inherently, or clearly, more sympathetic to our heroine, as you hoped”. I find this remark particularly pertinent as this was something I really struggled to achieve and obviously didn’t, so with my continuing work I’d like to produce a scene where the camera does not merely present an opportunity of voyeurism but one where the audience involves themselves with the plight of the central character without having to resort to filmic tropes like POV shots.
Robin also posed a question, asking “are elements (observable so far) like… urgent/emotional content relevant?” Thinking about this further I decided that I definitely want distance myself from depicting ‘urgent/emotional’ responses as much as possible as I feel like this in a way is almost too obvious, and I demonstrated that I have an ability to successfully do so. For my next exercise I really want to end up with something much more subtle and hopefully therefore more sophisticated. This ties in with my previous intention regarding the psychological mindset of the figure, as I want to figure out a way to present internalised struggles that can’t necessarily be acted in an obvious way.
Anyway I’m going to stew on these thoughts for a little and ponder my next move.
