Bottle Rocket: Martin Script

While we ended up filming the first half of Martin’s epic tale, I thought I’d include the second on my blog. While Martin’s 1st half is pretty comedic, full of his odd tangents and the inherent humour that comes from watching a grown man play a recorder, I tried to imbue his second half with a little vulnerability. While he’s an obnoxious idiot, he’s actually a nice guy, and I wanted to include some elements that would make him vaguely relatable and (importantly) likeable for the audience.

We didn’t film this segment of the Martin script for a couple of reasons. Firstly, Matt had his section done first, and we were all happy with the quality of the writing. Secondly, and more importantly, if I’m being honest, I think it’s just not as interesting to film. I don’t think that I wrote this script with the direct intention of filming it (something I’ve struggled with in the class exercises, too), and it’s a pretty static series of scenes, with the possible exception of Martin’s angry storm off on the street, which I would have loved to actually film. Otherwise, however, it’s fairly still – just a bunch of dialogue while everyone stays where they are. The script we ended up using is much more dynamic, it’s full of movement and changes locations more frequently, which is just more interesting to watch.
