After seeing James Franco’s The Disaster Artist and Tommy Wiseau’s The Room back to back at the Cinema Nova, I’ve been thinking all week about what makes a good film, or a good piece of content in general. What I think makes anything creative to be considered “good” is how an audience responds to it and what they get out of it. I have been in countless cinemas and I can safely say without question that going to a midnight screening of The Room is the most unique and enjoyable experience I have had in a cinema. Even with how entertaining The Disaster Artist was, it was really shocking seeing them back to back and how the audience reacted to both; one a legitimately well made film and another known as the “Citizen Kane of Bad Movies.”
Now thinking about all of this in terms of our music video really makes me question how it will be received, as our video is quite silly and isn’t intended to be taken as seriously as other music videos, which we did intentionally based on the style and substance of the track. I believe that we simply have to make it how we want it to be seen and the reception of it is out of our hands, where it could be taken by the audience in a way we may have not foreseen and we will just have to accept that.
“I always say that you don’t have to like ‘The Room’, but you will discover something – maybe a tiny little thing – and say, ‘Wait a minute, maybe I want to see more.'” – Tommy Wiseau
