In the reading “Music Video and the Politics of Representation”, writers Diana Railton and Paul Watson expressed their view on the representations of women within music videos, where they are generally exploited for their body, using the Pink video “Stupid Girls” as an example of a video that is heavily critiquing these representations.

This was a great paper to read as it has a lot of the same themes and ideas that we are trying to use in our music video production, critiquing not just how women are viewed in music videos but also how men view women. For our video the story centres around a guy who exploits women and is a total dick towards them, which we will convey creatively through replacing the female character with a blow up doll.

We feel this will add a lot of humour to the video and make it memorable, as well as effectively critiquing the nature of how we view women, especially within music videos where a lot of women are relegated to sex objects not unlike blow up dolls.

“Does feminist mean large unpleasant person who’ll shout at you or someone who believes women are human beings. To me it’s the latter, so I sign up” –  Margaret Atwood.
