In the final week of the semester most of my time went into the editing process of my video project. By filming the beginning and end sequences of the project early, I was able to start assembling the video quickly and use it as a reference for the rest of the scenes. What will be a challenge for this video project will be creating a sense of consistency across the different scenarios, as I’m intending of having drastic changes between the scenarios to get across the idea of a wide, expansive world. Music being used to tie the world together is a hopeful endeavour, and is a large part of the experiment of this project, which is solely reliant on the audience making the connection between the scenes. An approach I will trial in these scenarios is to capture the scene in a single, unbroken shot, allowing the audience to focus on the sound. In film and TV, I always respond to long, unedited sequences that allow you to immerse yourself within the scene, and this is something I try to emulate in a lot of my project, especially this one. However, I am worried that the brevity of this video will undercut the immerse potential of this project, as it is likely each scene will last for under 30-40 seconds, which is where the faith the audience will connect with each scenario becomes much greater. It is likely this project is going to be a test case for a concept that, when extended into a 9-12 minute short film, will be much more effective.
I’ve spent quite a bit of time in Pro Tools creating the different sound spaces for each scenario to place the music in. this was an important aspect of the project as it was crucial that the music always felt diegetic to tie each scene together as being within the same world, and happening over the same period of time.
On reviewing the footage we shot in the radio room at RMIT, I was impressed with the lighting and composition of the shots, as nothing appeared over or under exposed, and by filming in 4k it was easy to punch in closer on some of the shots without the fear of losing resolution.
