I was so impressed with what the group was able to make in a reasonably short span of time. Robin was originally quite sceptical of our ambitious plans for this project but I think we were able to create something really unique and creative. By combining several observations together, we gave ourselves a different dilemma of creating a thread between the several written pieces and make it feel ultimately like a singular piece, whereas if we stuck with just observation we’d be focused on representing a singular theme and idea.
This project felt a lot more like how we would be able to use what we’ve learnt in this studio in later pieces we would make in the world, of combining short written works and developing ways of threading them into a larger entity with a coherent story. This is where, while watching the end product we made was the main success of the video, and I think, if given more time, we could flesh it out even further into a larger project, as we created some very interesting characters in a very small amount of time.
The filming process was a breeze as I mentioned in a previous post, and we were all confident going forward with the editing process that our video would be of a high quality, which I can’t say has always been the case with video projects. I made a small sound design work to fill a lot of the space in the opening in the video and with a few spot sounds to really emphasise movements and actions. I thought the transition between the opening with Patrick in his dark, muted room, both visually and sonically, made the conclusion of the video in the street stand out and feel impactful. I really enjoyed being part of a group where I thought everyone was able to contribute their talents to making the project better, and even though there were elements of the video I would’ve shot differently, tonally I thought our video was great and told a cohesive story that I don’t think could have been done if multiple people worked on different parts of the project, forcing their own personal ideas into the video.
