The death of a musician is something that affects people in different ways. I still remember being on the train when the news of Michael Jackson’s death in 2009 came in, rocking people to their core, with the image of a woman in her 30s reading the news on her phone, fighting back tears as to not cause a scene on public transport, sits with me.

The recent passing of Scott Walker really affected me as I’ve loved his music for years, music which he continued to create consistently since the 60s. The loss of a great artist still creating exceptional work is heartbreaking, as you mourn not just the person, but the potential work that is now lost. So as I sit on the train, fighting back tears reading the news on my phone, I am conflicted about whether to immediately start listening to one of his albums, an act that would probably spark an emotional reaction unsuitable for public transport, or do I wait to get home, where I can do so privately.
