By creating two 6 second Vine videos, Sam and I were attempting to convey to our audience the restrictions of the Vine format, but also the video content app’s relationship to Twitter, which we view as the text based equivalent. We were both intrigued as to the nature of both social media platform’s, as Vine’s downfall can be narrowed down to its unflinching view on content restrictions, whereas Twitter has been critiqued for extending the length of their text content from 140 characters to 280. Fundamentally, these programs are quite strongly linked, and we wanted to show that link by using Vine to communicate both a short form and long form tweet, speaking at the same 140 character for 6 seconds duration, while using tweets that are critical of the new Twitter format. As I mentioned in a previous blog, concision is crucial in content creation, doubly so for online content where the attention of the consumer is so fragile and easily distracted.

With the hurried nature of our experiment, as well as limited quality of camera (both of our phone cameras are on their last legs), our video content was to a pretty low standard which was disappointing but I believe the message we were attempting to convey would be received. It was interesting that the main discussion of our video content was focused on the format and the key character of online media production that we wanted to comment on, with very little time to focus on the actual content and delivery approach. I believe over the course of this studio we will be much more capable at making a variation of content within a multitude of online platforms whilst also being concise and coherent.

The main I question I still have about online media production is how do we take advantage of the seemingly endless capabilities of online spaces to create the most entertaining and effective content, more than just creating a high quality video and uploading it to YouTube?
