Week 3’s director in focus was Dawn Shadforth, an english music video director who has rarely got the credit that she deserves, creating what I think was one of the most iconic music videos on this century; Kylie Minogue’s “Can’t Get You Out of My Head”.
What I found really interesting about Shadforth was that she has stayed exclusively within the realm of music videos as it was common for a lot of directors to start their careers there and then quickly moved on to feature length works. I respect her greatly for knowing exactly what she wants to create, pouring all of effort and creativity into all of her music videos and not phoning them in to put more effort into other projects.
In an interview with Shadforth, the director spoke about her collaboration with the artist Theo from the group Hurts which I found very interesting as she described how inspiring it was to work with a musician that was full of ideas for the videos. The artist we are working with for our music video have given us free reign for the video, so this was an incredibly different experience to Shadforth but I do hope in the future I will be able to work with musicians that have very acute ideas that I can collaborate with heavily.
