Week 3 Lecture – Copyrights and Law and stuff

In today’s lecture we were spoken to by Anne Lennox, RMIT’s Senior Coordinator Copyright Management + Digital (and works in the University Library). She discussed some of the many issues relating to copyright that we as media students face.

These include rights of ownership for content created, as well as the responsibility not to disregard other people’s copyright.

She also explained copyright law, creative commons, length of copyright duration (author’s life +70 years) and the exceptions under Fair Dealing, which allows for critque or review.

We also talked about how easily social media sites like Facebook or Twitter can easily breach copyright law.

As someone who briefly studied Legal Studies in school, I am already kind of aware of the copyright issues presented. However I am interested in trying to understand a bit more.
