Week 2: Media Lecture Recap (John Cage is stupid)

In this week’s lecture, we discussed the composer John Cage and his work “4’33”, which is basically 4 minutes (and 33 seconds to be precise) of silence whilst sitting at a piano. Yeah. Not joking.

 

One of the main questions that was bounced off this idea was what defines music, and if you could consider this music? I don’t think this is, due to the fact that in my mind, music consists of a rhythmic or melodic arrangement of sounds that is aesthetically pleasing to the ear. The sound of awkward gasps for air during silence (which we unfortunately had to suffer through) during the lecture does not count as music. Sorry.

 

That’s just my thoughts and I could be entirely wrong. But I’m not.
