Media Week 6 Lecture

This lecture was split up into two parts. Part one was focused on using the RMIT system library to find references to use in projects and assignments. I found this to be quite useful, because I’ve obviously never used the RMIT system library before. In terms of when covering jstool and other search engines specifically tailored to academic findings, I had already had a decent amount of knowledge on this because I did a thesis subject for VCE last year. That said there were many tips that were given that I thought would be quite useful so I definitely would be wise to take note of them.

The second part of the lecture discussed the concept of collaboration, and what it means to collaborate as part of a team. I presume this was discussed because of a future brief that will require us to do such a thing. This however is pure speculation as there wasn’t too much context as to what such a brief will be on. I’ve really only had experiences working in this sort of atmosphere during my schooling career, and usually they’ve played out the same way in that there would be a few people actually doing the work while the others laid back and let them. This would usually be completed with the “slackers” being told to just read their lines that go with the appropriate slide they’ve been assigned and hoping they can read so that we don’t all fail. I kinda hope that doesn’t happen here. That’d be a bit miserable. At the same time, I think that unlike school, in which you have to attend, legally, university is an option for people, and I assume that if one wasn’t up for these sorts of experiences, they’d not be attending in the first place. Thus I have hope that I will have better experiences in groups at university than at school. Because it really wouldn’t take much.
