Week 13 – So much work, exeJESUS

l’ve almost most finished the film, and it’s really starting to turn out how I imagined. I’ve used a lot of gamma discoloration and tinting of my footage in order to give it a kind of dark aesthetic that I was looking for. It has the kind of dark aura that you’d get in a horror film, without it being something that will scare you and rather just creep you out. I also kind of changed how I wanted the film to be arranged from before, for which I said it would be purely experimental. I’ve incorporated a bit of the Kuleshov effect, which we learned a little about last semester. The shots I’ve filmed and used are not directly related in the sense that there’s no causal link between them. However, by showing them one after another, one forms their own ideas on the meaning behind the film, and what it means to them more specifically.

For the sounds, I’m creating the soundscape in the sense that there is no music, and rather sounds that I’ve created or found in sample packs that I have (I produce music in my spare time, so they’ve come in handy). This has also been a unique part of the challenge of this brief, as I’ve never assembled and built my own soundscape from scratch. However, I’m finding that this is giving me a little bit more control about the way I’m able to manipulate the film and how it feels. As such, its coming about in an experimental, yet dark way.

I’m a bit worried about the exegesis though. I haven’t finished the film yet and it feels like it’s taking a while, and coupled with a few other assignments from my other classes, I’m worried I won’t be able to complete the exegesis sufficiently. I spoke to Dan last Thursday, and he told me to treat it like an essay, although a little bit less formal. I have lots of ideas, and have drawn on quite a bit of literature, but I wonder about how I plan to structure it, and whether or not I have to mention how the film I made is representative of the frame as I see it. I guess I’ll have to finish editing before I can really consider writing that all down. If I can have this all done in the next few days I’ll be stoked.
