Last week we conducted our second filming session at Riverslide, but this time with the inclusion of Jenna, who we established as one of our primary interviewees after meeting her the first time we’d visited Riverslide. Unfortunately, the weather (think glare-y, grey skies and intermittent torrents of downpour) hindered our ability to get the footage that we had initially envisioned but we worked with what we had and adapted to the conditions, and ended up shooting the entire interview. At first, the overcast sky made our shots look over-exposed so we waited a bit hoping the clouds would disappear. We used this time to chat to Jenna, which was valuable in the end as it was important for us to build a rapport with our interviewee to ensure she felt relaxed and comfortable chatting with us. We wanted Jenna to provide candid and authentic answers to our questions, which is why it was important for us to build that trust before we went ahead.
The skate park was empty given the state of the weather, but instead of lamenting over the gloomy atmosphere we used it to our advantage by shooting Jenna while she skated on her own. This worked in our favour as it meant we could shoot from anywhere in the park without being in the way of other skaters – something that had been a minor inhibition in the past. Fortunately for us the sun eventually broke through, and we immediately took the opportunity to make the most of the natural lighting and film Jenna answering our questions with the skate park and city in the background. The bulk of our interview footage with her was completed today, however we plan on organising another catch-up just to get a few extra shots of her so that we have plenty of b-roll in our arsenal.
