This week I missed our Monday class, and then found myself one of only three people rocking up on Wednesday to an empty room and an email telling me the class was cancelled. Ah, now I see why I should be more diligent with checking uni emails… safe to say I’ve learnt my lesson! Silver lining was that it got me up early and prepared to do work, so instead I sat down and nutted out my pieces for Project Brief 3. This began with writing a review on David Lynch’s short film Absurda, which admittedly was a more difficult task than I had anticipated. I started off with what was recommended by doing ‘idiot writing’, and despite this being something I don’t usually do, I was surprised to see how much came out through the process of writing without giving it too much thought. Basically I jotted down whatever came to mind while I was watching the film, a lot of which was culled when I re-read it. I wasn’t entirely sure what to include and what to eliminate, and in general the main thing I struggled with was the lack of guidance when writing the review. Without any list of things to include or a rubric, I wasn’t too sure where to begin. I’ve enjoyed the creative freedom we are given in this studio when it comes to the topics we want to write on, and how we go about writing them. Yet at the same time, I find it difficult being left completely to my own devices to construct something that I hope will be well-received. It’s definitely a challenge, but one that has been enjoyable to take!
