This week we watched a behind-the-scenes video of the set of Ray Donovan. I found it particularly interesting because I had very little prior knowledge of how sets and worlds in film are constructed. It surprised me to know that even the views from a window can be superimposed through a green screen! I also found it interesting that every camera shot, angle and other stylistic decision when it comes to the filming of the screen work is deliberate. One focus of the video was the importance of the opening shot which pans over the Hollywood sign before coming down into a pool where one of the characters lays on an inflatable lounge, with members of the crew describing the rationale behind each detail of the shot.
The idea was that Los Angeles was a ‘third-character’ in the show. This conceptualised our previous understanding of worlds – that they can be given personality and constructed with as much character as actual human characters. We tried to build on this as a group when taking our photo series, using RMIT as our third-character.
