PATTERN: In Eulogy To Suburbia a very clear pattern is established between the images and pieces of film. The idea of suburbia, its natural way of being and its ability to create home and peacefulness is a specifically clear and outright message that is correlated between the series of 6-10 second pieces of film. It uses the patterns of everyday life to help convey this message, with simple images of the rubbish bin, cars parked in the street, houses at dusk and dawn; images you expect to see when walking around a neighbourhood at random or specific times of the day. Through using the idea of suburbia and its expected qualities, this Korsakow film effortlessly correlates the link between its images due to representing an idea, or view, of suburbia that already exists. The pattern is something that relies on the viewer knowing what they’re seeing and runs off the expectation that through seeing the images a feeling of belonging, understanding or knowledge will arise from the series of films. Using diegetic sounds throughout the clips, a further correlation to reality is set in motion and adds a connection between the visuals, the time of day and the atmosphere at the point in time of the filming. By relying on diegetic sound the clips are brought together to create the whole outlook on suburbia and through this the pattern of Eulogy To Suburbia is rather successful in conveying a certain theme to its audience.
These are some examples from the work where time of day is effortlessly portrayed in a suburban setting:

1. Dawn
dusk

2. Early Morning
early morning

3. Dusk
dusk1

These three images together, although within the film are shown at random, create a clear and understandable pattern that is clearly defined in the setting of suburbia.

INTERFACE: The interface used in Eulogy To Suburbia is a simple and classic view of a Korsakow project. It features the main moving film situated centre and connected to the optional thumbnails underneath. It operates by the user clicking on a selected thumbnail to watch and without constant interaction with the clips it shuts off with the choice to continue. I personally enjoy the interface of this project, with it being easy to understand and all that there is to offer being immediately open for you to view. Although its layout and modes of operation are pretty simple I think they could be made smoother. I’ve noticed in other Korsakow films you’re able to view the thumbnail by just running over it with the mouse to make it play and I think this is a good feature that Eulogy To Suburbia is missing. Apart from that small criticism this Korsakow film displays an ideal interface for the beginner user or for people wanting to have a browse through the selections but if it wanted to become a further advanced film among the others there are a few more advanced interface options it could explore.

CONTENT: The content of this film is genuine and uncompromising, in relation to what it’s representing. The heading Eulogy To Suburbia, in my opinion, represents the shrinking of idealistic suburban suburbs due to the increase of housing developments and apartments. Although this is not specifically shown in the film, it’s the perfect and harmonic depictions of suburban life within the clips that suggest the idea of leaving with the best memory of suburbia just as one would talk about the best memories in a eulogy to their loved one. The content plays perfectly to this idea, as we see no negative clips, just plain, simple and realistic depictions of particular suburbs. As well as being suited to the heading, the content within the film is genuinely of good quality and is true to the iPhone form. Although it’s not the iPhone that we are particularly concentrated on it’s the idea that the iPhone is taken everywhere and we can record everyday things with the camera function and the clips in this film are a perfect example of that. Their filming standard may not always be as perfect as it can but I think this plays with the main concept of a Korsakow film in that we see reality instead of fabricated content.

The idea of pattern, interface and content working together within a Korsakow film is that the message being conveyed is portrayed correctly or represented in the manner the creator desires. Content is the starting point to achieving this message with it being important to capture the right film to establish a ground. Pattern works with interface to create the way we move around the project and help portray the way the message or film is perceived by the viewer. Eulogy To Suburbia uses these techniques well to help the viewers identify with the work and create their own meaning from the clips and the work as a whole.
