In experiment 4, I placed non-diegetic sound over the dialogue clip I created in experiment 1. In experiment 5, I planned to recreate the same clip, yet with no dialogue between the actors. Then I would add the “sad” non-diegetic music, and see if it changed the emotional intensity.
Using the dialogue shot scenes I had filmed without dialogue between the actors, I began by creating a sequence that was identical to the dialogue switching scene I had created in experiment 1.
I used the same behind-the-seat establishing shot, but then looked for the matching shots that don’t employ dialogue for the rest of the clip.
For Matt’s shots, I looked through clip 0447, once I found the shot I was happy with, I pasted the attributes from the previous clip.
I was expecting the colour grading attributes to work fine, given they are essentially the same shot, but I was still happy it worked out ok.
Once this was completed, I went through and did the same for the rest of Matt’s shots, as well as Max’s respective shots, and pasted the colour and scaling attributes on each one.
Now the scene was all put together, and I was really happy with the result. The colour grading I had pasted had achieved the same nostalgic tone and feel from experiment 1.
Now it was time to sync the music to the clip. I brought the “sad” song out to the front of the scene, and then made sure the breaking of the songs “climax” was timed with the establishing shot.
Now it was time to export the clip
The clip is linked below:
This syncing of the music worked really well for me. The breaking of the musics climax hitting just as we first see Matt gives the whole scene an overly exaggerated feeling of sadness which is what I was aiming for. It’s amazing how the scene feels like it works to its own rhythm when you add the music. The scene overall has a rather exaggerated look and feel, but that is exactly what I wanted, it was supposed to be funny and strange. The emotional intensity has been successfully influenced by the addition of music here, in fact its been made too intense for the scene to be considered realistic anymore.
