On Tuesday I will be conducting a 2 hour test shoot to deliberate on the shot types I want to use before I actually begin to officially film.
I am doing this so that mainly I can feel less anxious before I shoot properly on Friday, as knowing the types of shots I want to do and how to set them up would be helpful and would make me feel a lot more confident in my preparation.
I will be setting up 4 major shot/scene types on Tuesday. I have created some basic storyboards to explain what I will be doing.
1. Side on angle
This is a shot taken directly from Short Term 12, which I analysed in a previous post. My aim is to switch focus from subject 1 to subject 2.
2. Front on angle
This will be a Wes Anderson inspired shot that basically aims to frame an entire conversation within a single shot, angle and frame
3. Shot from behind
This will be a much colder shot that will allow the chairs behind people to occupy a large amount of the frame. It will hopefully voyeuristically allow the viewer to feel like they are an intruder in a conversation.
4. Basic dialogue cutting
Here I will be aiming to shoot dialogue/lack thereof as simply as possible, simply switching between matching angles, this time hopefully not breaking the 180 degree rule again like last time.
For each shot I will be writing down the focal lengths and zoom distance if possible, so that I can recreate them as efficiently as possible when I actually shoot.
However, it could turn out that a number of these shots don’t work, and then I may have to change them, which is the benefit of having a test shoot to find this out before I actually begin shooting.
