Week 12 Final Tutorial Reflection

Todays tutorial was the final tutorial for the course, and once again saw us working on our project brief 4 pieces. After wrapping up filming, my group is now focussed on creating an opening sequence.

Similar to the opening of a documentary, we plan for the sequence to feature a variety of images of activist protests that will be cut together in a fast paced montage of 30 seconds to a minute.

This will then be accompanied by both a musical piece, and an audio interview.

Musical Piece

The musical piece is one I found from a public domain website, titled “Resistance”. It aims to reflect and imitate the scores of epic film composers such as Hans Zimmer in its sweeping and engaging tones and crescendos.

Currently, as you can see in the screenshot, I am experimenting with altering the sound and frequencies of the piece. It is currently a little too fast paced, and I feel like a slower, darker tone would suit the opening sequence.

Interviews

I have recorded a number of vox-pop interviews with activists throughout Melbourne, which I am planning to place in the montage. However, most importantly, I have now recorded an audio interview with Lecturer and activist Liam Ward, who provided some interesting and beautifully relevant thoughts and an expert opinion on the issue of social media and activism. Liam’s interview is exactly what I was looking for and I’m actually quite excited at the prospect of putting it in.

Footage

The actual video footage has mainly been taken from the public domain website www.archive.org

The footage I am planning to use is composed mainly of 3 different styles.

Some of the artifacts are form old documentaries, the one shown is from a piece documenting the struggle for civil rights in Selma.

Others are in the form of archived news stories. For example, the one shown is from a news piece about the anti-Vietnam rallies in America.

Finally, there are “found footage” pieces. These are mainly from the Arab Spring revolutions in Egypt in 2010-11 and are from civilians mobile phones.

Overall I am eager to get started on piecing the opening sequence together, and overall finishing the project.
