This will on be a short blog, due to the entirety of the tutorial being spent on our project briefs.
This tutorial for me was focussed on my group interviewing activists and seeking their thoughts on the way social media has changed the spectrum of activism.
Just to recap, whilst our group is primarily creating a narrative that follows the life of two contemporary activists, we are also opening the piece with a montage of physical activist events throughout modern history, with audio grabs of conflicting opinions about social media and activism playing over the top.
Whilst we initially struggled to muster up the courage for interviews, we eventually realized there really was no other choice but to simply go through with it and start asking people questions.
I have interviewed 3 activists currently, one of my favorites was with a man supporting the ‘no room for racism’ campaign in Melbourne.
The campaign recently has been aimed at opposing an oppositely racist “reclaim Australia” campaign, a group who oppose Islam and its presence in Australia.
The person I interviewed had some interesting thoughts on social media, stating that while it has fueled a lot of talking-without-action, it has also raised awareness for issues such as same-sex marriage, and made a real difference in these issues. A difference which he believed never would have been made if not for the presence of social media.
