Personal Vlog “Femininity and Identity in Star Wars (1977)”

This week we are focussing on “narrative” for the course.

A film that I believe is essential to narrative is the original Star Wars. Leia Organa, whilst she is developed as any “quest” character would be as part of Booker’s Seven Basic Plots, she differed in her strength that was not seen in a female character at that time. Here is a vlog I did discussing the influence that Leia Skywalker (Carrie Fischer) had on feminism when she was first seen on screen in 1977. It was one of the first truly strong female characters we saw in blockbuster film and her role in film history is not one to be underplayed. I also think it is quite tragic (as I discuss in the vlog) that by the time of 1983’s Return of the Jedi, this characters strength had been somewhat dismissed to appeal more to a male audience. ]
