Scene analysis 1
Scene from movie: Like Sunday Like Rain (2014)
Characters:
Women: Eleanor (Leighton Meester)
Boy: Reggie (Julian Shatkin)
Storyline: LIKE SUNDAY, LIKE RAIN tells the story of Reggie, a 12-year-old rich prodigy who lives in a castle in New York, surrounded by wealth but living a lonely life as his parents are frequently absent. Eleanor is a young musician going through the pains of growing up, who is having problems with her boyfriend and was recently fired from her job. This is a beautiful story about discovery and acceptance.
The clip:
Eleanor hears someone is playing the cello, she walks towards to the sound. She opens the door and sees the boy Reggie is playing the cello. Reggie sees her and stops playing.
Eleanor
No no no no no no don’t stop, it’s beautiful
Reggie
No, it’s really not, not felling too inspired for the cello these days.
Eleanor
So this is where you practice?
Reggie puts the cello back into the holder.
Reggie
It’s the best place in the house, perfect acoustics.
Eleanor walks around.
Eleanor
This place…… I mean this house is incredible.
Reggie
It was built by captain Francis Fowke in 1896. He also designed the museum of natural history. It was purely a fan of big, overbearing swimming pool.
Eleanor
Why is it empty?
Reggie
Oh, my mom was going to get tiles handmade in my orchards, or something rather. Guess she hasn’t gotten around to it. A lot of things in this house she hasn’t gotten around to do as you can clearly see.
Eleanor
Yeah, but in the meantime you could be swimming in it.
Reggie
No, not me. Don’t know how.
Eleanor
What? Why?
Reggie
Guess nobody ever taught me.
Eleanor
Well that won’t do. I’ll teach you.
Eleanor and Reggie both smile.
Scene Analysis:
The first shot in this clip is a long and wild shot, Eleanor is walking down the stairs, as she walking the wild shot becomes a close up shot. While Eleanor walks down stairs, she walks from the light place to the dark place and show up again which gives me a feeling about cannot wait to see where does the sound come and who is playing.
Then, it is a shot for her back towards to the cello voice room, when she opens the door, the shot changes to a close up shot from her front, which adds more mystique to the sound.
The shot jumps to her back again in case to show her moving, and gives us a wild shot about the room as well. We can see Reggie is playing down the swimming pool.
The next shot shoots from Eleanor’s location. It gives us a visual perception about the space.
All the shots while they talking are subjective shot. Feel more connective between them.
One thing I think could be better is while Eleanor is walking closer, the voice of the cello could be louder.
