THE POWER OF A GOOD STORY // LECTURE BY DANIEL BINNS

When Dan introduced himself at the beginning of the lecture, exclaiming that he would in fact be conducting this weeks lecture, I sat in my seat like a pushy mother; equal parts proud, excited and hoping he doesn’t embarrass me in front of everyone.

Thankfully, Dan did no such thing. His lecture was incredibly enthralling as he dissected the makings of a good story. Dan began wit the basics, discussing character development, plot and resolution. Following, he delved into many popular television shows relating the success of the shows back to the basics he had previously discussed; I feel this would have been a fantastic aspect of the lecture, however I am not an avid viewer of House of cards, and the rest of the shows he mentioned (evidently, as I can’t even recall the names).

Dan proceeded to talk us through a graph of ones emotional response when watching a successful story, then asking us to then brainstorm shows which correlate with the graph; Harry Potter, Star Wars, Lord of the rings and many other dramatic science fiction films were amongst popular favourites.

The most enthralling part of the lecture I found was the viewing of Daniel Askills short film, I immersed in the film as I could not immediately understand what was occurring; An uncertainty of what I am viewing annoys me to know end whilst also encapsulating me (Why I have watched inception an uncountable number of times).

Thus I spent a long time watching films by him when I got home, his background in music videos provides a strong under current of whimsical, nonsensical beauty alongside an allusive soundtrack. I find his work fascinating and would love to pursue a similar aesthetic in the future.
