Self Portrait // One

In creating my multimedia self portrait I mulled over many ideas. Initially, I photographed places which held important meaning to me; whilst my images were aesthetically pleasing, they did not hold the emotional depth I hoped for. Thus I began a new venture, I have decided to photograph those whom are closest to me, whilst in particular locations which also hold particular significance to our relationship. I believe that the people whom one surrounds themselves with reflect exactly ones identity. I hold many qualities very dear to me, each photographed individual reflects and attains these qualities.

I chose not to pose the images, attempting to capture the inherent essence of the person.

The first image of my sister Hannah, photographed at our favourite cafe Patch in Richmond perfectly articulates her innocent nature; although Hannah is three years elder than I am, somehow I feel immensely protective over her as she has such a delicate spirit, quite the opposite to myself.

The second photograph is of my mother Felicity, once again the image perfectly encapsulates her, Although I stated numerous times that the image was to be unposed, this was the result. I absolutely adore her along with her vanity which I most likely have inherited.

The third image is of my father Peter, a true epicure. My father has definitely passed down his love for food and cooking, thus playing a large role in positioning my self portrait around the experience of dining.

The fourth image is of my boyfriend Harry, I love the photograph as he looks so placidly at the camera, accustomed to my constant photographing when we are out. The warm lighting of the image further exemplifies his caring nature and outlook on life.

Within my sound clippings, I decided to define myself by what I am not. Thus, something which I have no interest in is watching sports, a big interest of many of my close friends and family. Furthermore, I am not musically talented in any sense, however that does not in any way affect my love for music. Thus I have recorded myself listening to my favourite artist The Kite String Tangle whilst mildly attempting to sing along.

Lastly, within the films I decided to return to my initial idea about landscapes and places which hold particular importance to myself, thus the first film is taken whilst driving to my beach house where I grew up on the Mornington Peninsula. The second film, is taken at Melbourne Fashion Week, exemplifying my love for Melbourne culture and my attempt to indulge in many creative outlets.
