Reflection
The first assignment, The workplace of Tomorrow, allowed us to explore the future variety of technology development and envisioned the potential of future technology advantages and disadvantages in the workplace. Moreover, through the exercise of 2-min film creation, it motivated us practically to re-consider the coming change of the world from our visions briefly through the processes of filming and editing.
In my two-minute film, I roughly assume a technology of AI (artificial intelligence) assistant would potentially improve our route lives from health status to work such as what food should I eat for better health status or what road should I go for taking less time. Given opinions by the AI assistant seems to be incredibly convenient for humans. However, with the current development of AI technology, it reminds me the instability of machine learning could have brought an unpredictable consequence for us. Brundage, in The Malicious Use of Artificial Intelligence: Forecasting, Prevention, and Mitigation mentioned the serious security issue about the risk of attack if an AI system is once attacked or the happen of vulnerabilities, it might heavily lead to the situation of humans losing control of machines. (Brundage et al, 2018). For instance, Telsa is worldwide famous for its invention of electric cars with the autopilot (AI system). However, according to these report websites, Tesla Deaths, Tesla: 1 Crash Per 4.41 Million Miles Traveled On Autopilot – CleanTechnica, the autopilot could have a percentage that causes car crashes even death by system vulnerabilities. The intention of autopilot was an additional function for better assistance for car drivers, then humans underestimated the consequence and ignored the importance of security of AI system. In other words, it is less dangerous for human safety to utilise robots for repeated and fixed working progresses in the workplace, such as what the factory has in modern society. Yet, once the content of the working environment involves AI learning, a human would be required to pay more attention to the process instead of the final result to avoid the safety issue by any severe vulnerability.
There has the same concern about the vulnerability of voice privacy that exists in most families, especially there is an increasing penetration rate proved more users. (Malkin, Nathan et al, 2019). When users purchased from a store and agreed on the privacy authorisation, the details of your private data such as weight, voice, even address all have been uploaded to the company database. In “Are Deep Fakes a Shallow Concern? (Malkin, Nathan et al, 2019) also provides two sides of positive and negative effects to society for what if the public owns users’ information. The authors ultimately indicate the worst influence could be the media complexly combining unreliable information sources and the technology of deep fakes has been mostly used as negatively.
Moreover, in terms of the imagination of the virtual AI assistant in my film, it is simulated as a pair of glasses device with AR (Augmented Reality) technology by giving you the best recommendation for everything based on big-data analysis. With the customised settings of daily life, the virtual AI assistant provides effective information such as your favourite news, media, lifestyle and even boosting working assistance. There have been decent years humans attempted to improve real-world development but in recent years, the technology development has transferred to the Internet as developers tend to give more imagined creations into the virtual world with unlimited spaces. The idea of AR goggles was deeply inspired by Free guy (2021), Ready Player One (2018) and Her (2013), which whether used the concept of a virtual assistant or a virtual world in the goggles.
As a result, through the reflection, I have learnt more about how AI technology has brought positive and negative influences on our society. The awareness of using AI technology would be humans’ current intention for reducing the addiction and properly letting AI technology involve in our daily lives. It is also unexpected to me as I just only considered the advantage of improving the convenience to human society.
