The Scene in Cinema Week 7 Reflection

REFLECTION

For week 7, if we were not impacted by Covid-19, we might be already constructing our practical works for final. Instead, we now turned into doing a research project for assignment #3 and #4. Through precisely analysed film scene, it was also an approach to boost our fundamental film knowledge, I thought. To begin with, I would like to get started with my strongest interest in the whole semester, the mysterious “Decoupage, Montage, Mise en scene”, which was also the aim of the course that we are investigating too. For understanding the initial concept of Decoupage, Montage, Mise en scene, the best way to interpret the entire 100 years-old film history was reading Timothy Barnard’s texts. According to Barnard(2014), “today is still virtual absent from film theory and debate in any languages, even French”, and I think, Yes. When I actually looked up the history of Decoupage, Montage, Mise en scene, these filmic slangs seemed like fragmental pieces in the film history. And, also the topic for investigating Decoupage, Montage, Mise en scene was too pointless for a research project, so I tried to narrow down the topic of the research to only “Decoupage”. Thus, I roughly processed a chart of the evolution of decoupage. Clearly, I could find out the definition of decoupage had varied over time in the past such as from France to the U.S., even evolved to the other system of filmmaking, called “Decoupage Technique”, then was modified to a kind of industrial filmic technique by Hollywood. Seems like it would be a grant job to organise the whole things up.
