Descriptive & Analytical Writing: Children of Men
In cinemas, directors attempt to express their ideas visually, impliedly or even as realistically as they wish. Through the directors’ delicate arrangement, we can see the innovations and challenges again and again. “Children of Men”(2006) was directed by Alfonso Cuarón Orozco, who was also famous in utilising a numerous the long takes. In this film, some long-takes consisted of scenes by post-processing, to make the film entirely. Also, the technique of Mise en scène was deployed perfectly in a couple of scenes. The director successfully created the restlessness and unknown to the audience.
For the plot, roughly, it talked about humans lose their fertility in the next 18 years and the last black pregnant was their miracle.
In this clip, I would like to discuss how the director constructs the coverage of this scene respectively. Firstly, There was a flow between actors. The director attempted to switch between the point of view shots and objective shots as for interactions of the main characters’ and crowds’ moods repeatedly. Through this lens, we could experience the gaze between the main characters and other actors. Also, Due to the difference in numbers, we could also be more like other actors, to pay attention to the movement of the protagonists.
Secondly, with the hand-held shots, Mise en scène should be used more effectively in such a narrow space. In this scene, when the position of lens changed, the crowd actors could also follow with the movement of the lens (From 2:08-2:53).
In just 50 seconds, we also saw a strong contrast between the reality of war and the hope brought by the newborn baby. Then, with the moment the missile entered the scene, the feeling of indulging in the dream suddenly returned to reality. This shows how important rehearsal before shooting.
