Todays lecture when Dan spoke to us was by far my favourite lecture. It completely interested me which was a refreshing change to all the previous lectures.
He talked about narratives and the persuasiveness of a story, reminding us that everything is story and story is everything.
He talked about causality, the importance of character development, plot and resolution. This was great because i’ve already voluntarily studied up on these topics just purely for self interest and hence understood what he was discussing.
“The stuff of story is alive but intangible” – Robert McKee
We then did an activity where we mapped a story based on its emotional highs and lows, and the character prominence. My group chose Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets – so our map was quite intense.
“A hero ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of supernatural wonder: fabulous forces are there encountered and a decisive victory is won: the hero comes back from this mysterious adventure with the power to bestow boons on his fellow man”
