Written Reflection:
Project brief 3 challenged me to do a portrait on someone I know. I chose someone who is very close to me and I know very well, my twin sister Vienna. However, the reason I chose Vienna was because she is a very interesting character who I think would interest the audience for the 2 minutes of viewing time.
I chose Vienna because she has a devoted interest in both music and art. These two subjects fully represent who she is and are the reason for who she is today. This project discusses how much music and art have influenced her life.
In my self portrait, I believe my most successful part was the found footage. The two videos complement what Vienna is discussing, and shows the emotions music draws on in people lives. However, An issue I found with making this project was that 2 minutes was a significantly short and restrictive amount of time to introduce an audience to someone they do not know. I had a lot of footage I could have used but was restricted due to the time limits. Therefore, a lot of the footage is of art Vienna has created, and her environment, rather than just the camera on her face and her talking. I do hope this was not a barrier in the audience getting to know who she is.
In making this project I learnt the important of recording audio as well as filming. I did record audio on my phone, whilst filming with a camera borrowed from RMIT, however the audio added up to be 40 minutes long and hence too big to transfer to my computer to add to the video. Therefore, I had to record Vienna again on my computer. Next time, I would like to try editing software different to iMovie, as I feel I could be using a better video-making program.
I also learnt about copyright when doing this project. I did come under some issues as I was worried, although all found footage was on an archive website, that it still may not fit in with the requirements. Therefore I had to contact my teacher to make sure. I had troubles with the music, when I learnt my music may not be allowed, I was unable to change it as iMovie would not play audio of any other tracks for some reason. This caused some trouble in making the project.
This project was a great learning experience and I look forward to more projects in the future.
