Written Reflection:
My project “A Self Portrait” showcases my identity to those whom do not know me, and to myself. This was a very interesting project, which tested my creativity and ability to express myself in an unusual way. In an attempt to provide an insight into my true identity, I separated my film into a more personal segment, which focused on how identity and belonging are undeniably related, one must belong to find identity, and people find identity in belonging. I then explored how my identity is also recognition of more external factors – such as a soccer match, or the outside world. These external factors of my identity are showcased in the later parts of the one minute video. This was done to communicate the several influences different factors have on an identity.
Throughout this project, the only transitions used fade to white. This colour represents goodness. This was purposeful as this video showcases the good in my life. The start of my video showed a green grass which related to my own identity as I spend a lot of my time in these environments and find this peaceful solitude a huge influence on my identity.
The most successful part of my self-portrait was the audio of me playing the ukulele. This sound instilled a happy, calm mood to the video, which are accurate traits of my personality. This music then created a strong juxtaposition to the next section of the project, which is very fast paced. Furthermore, I believe the least successful part of my self-portrait was when the audio changes. The audio was not long enough to have background noise throughout the whole piece, so there is silence between the audios. However, this may be seen as a refreshing break before a more chaotic section of the self-portrait begins.
I communicated my identity in this project, which is formed by my family, upbringing, education and the outside world, whether it is the nature is surround myself in or the busyness of others.
