Observational documentary mode or the ‘flies on the wall’ technique is definitely a style that we are trying to apply in our documentary. This technique, a style that impliments realism on screen is an approach we are going for. Speaking of observational mode, “From a distant gaze…” seemingly has intriguing shots that might have some inspiration to our documentary as well.
Another point from the reading would be remaining eye contact. It was said that documentary makers learn how to stage interviews so that interviewees will appear to speak directly to the viewer. It is essential to remain eye contact to the interviewee and give visual, not verbal. Errol Morris, the director of The Thin Blue Lines elaborates; to look as if you’re listening. Listening to what people are saying isn’t important but to look as if you’re listening is. Interview scenes increase the clarity and directness of speech through editing technique and shooting conventions.
