Question 1:
The most obvious and the most amount of work done in colour grading is in our vox pox scene. During filming our interviews, our shots were over exposed and we have to tone it down. However, one of the shots was too overexposed that the background is too bright and we lost information to darken it. Therefore, we have to increase the contrast of the shot in order to have a slightly darker look.
The shot of the person in purple had to be reframed as the background’s over exposed part has to be removed.
Since the contrast of every shot in the vox pox scene has been changed, we have to change every other shots as well to have that consistency feel.
Question 2:
My goals this semester in this course would be to make an interesting documentary that would peak audience’s interest. I took True Lies: Documentary last semester and that course has opened my eyes in documentary filmmaking. Hence, Film TV 2 is more practical and I got the chance to film a documentary. However, things were not as easy as expected. Although documentary does not have that much of those artistic shots, but it may be tough sometimes to make the video flow in a sense of having a narrative structure. Overall, I have learned a lot from this course; from pre-production to post-production. In some ways it was similar to Film TV 1 which was filming a short film, and in other ways it was different. Filming a short is telling a story through acting. Filming a documentary tends to be a little serious in my opinion and most of our stuff is not scripted. My team and I have to think through and overcome the problems such as participant’s awkwardness and dealing with badly shot footage. In editing, I have learned more skills as well. For instance, in the concept of J and L-cut, a short film uses that technique to make a film seemed to have multiple cameras and the film to look smooth. In documentary making, we use the J and L-cut to do the same but in a away that we use cut-away shots to fill up the gaps too. If a person is speaking about candles and lights, we insert the shots of candles and lights so that the description fits its context. All in all, the course has lived up to my expectation. It was very much how I thought it would turn out except the part in editing. It was also very helpful to learn some new sets of skills.
