Follow
Follow is an experimental film showing the process of pursuing an moving red light in a forest. The film does not have any character or conversation in it, but it used the movement of camera to guide the audience to the end where the red light was finally found inside a hole in a stump and then disappeared. A mysterious background music was played through out the film, it has created a creepy atmosphere for the audience, especially for the ones watching the film for the first time, the music and the movement of camera will make the audience feel curious about what is going to happen later.
The film also used a lot of close-up shots during the chasing. Especially focused on the details of trees. The camera was hand held all the way, which puts the audience into a first person perspective. The movement of camera showed the steps the photographer took, it helped making the film look like an adventure and added in more sense of participation for the audience. The angles photographer uses kept changing in this film, and there is always a short blackout between every shot, this gives the audience a feeling of lost, that he didn’t know where he was and where to go. This added in another layer of creepyness into the film.
At the end of the film, the red light was finally found, but when the camera close up on the stump and light disappeared and then a zoom sound effect that sounds a lot like a scream was played while the camera zooms into the dark hole. This part if my favorite in this film. It was completely unexpected and looks very abstract. The film developed this sense of creepyness since the beginning and actually put in something a little scary at the end when I thought nothing else is going to happen. In my opinion it is a perfect finish for this film.
