Today, James and us met in the editing suite and did a few changes to the films so we can put the best version in the exhibition.
First problem we had was in “Lost”, the part of the girl taking pills seems like a suicide to most people. But my first intention was just to show she’s in a really bad condition, she need medicines to calm down or stay sober. However because of the emotion she was showing and she looked a bit unstable in the scene, it looked like a suicide to audience. So we had to take this part off. This taught me to be more careful with the scene-selecting in films. Everyone can have a different understanding of the scene, but if just a minority of people think it’s something else, it will be alright, on the other hand if most people think it’s something else, maybe we are doing it wrong. The face expression and emotion is really important, and I will be more careful about this in the future.
Another problem was in the “Disturb” film when the mother waves and screams, it looked very awkward. I have mentioned this scene in some of the previous posts. After looking at the original footage, we think it looks awkward because in the scene we put in the film, she kind of waved down her hands, so the scene is showing her face, and the acting skill isn’t so good in this scene, therefore it looks awkward. So we decided to use the parts where her hand covers half of her face, so it will look better and less awkward.
There’s another scene where the daughter shows up behind her mom in the bathroom, when the mother closes the closet, the daughter suddenly shows up. Because we used slow motion in this scene, the low frame rate ruined it and made it look low quality. So we decided to use normal speed for this one, it will look better and also less like those vintage horror films.
It is important to look at your work and reflect on it in order to make it better. That’s also why I enjoy writing reflections and making modifications to my photos and films. It is crucial to learn from the old and make it better in the future.
