Although the first project is an abstract film, but it was quite different from what I usually do. Because Samantha is the main director of the film, I didn’t have too much space to use my creativity. My style of shots is also not that suitable to put in to that film, so for this project, I would like to do more of what I usually do. I would like to do a bigger project on light and shadow because that’s what I am interested in.

I like the relationship between light and shadow. They are the opposite of each other but the won’t exist if it weren’t for each other. There is the concept of light because of the existence of shadow, and it’s the same if other way around. So I would like to do a film on light and shadow. Since, that’s the main theme, I want to make it black and white, so audience can just focus on light and shadow, and this can avoid having color as a distraction. I also want to make this film look a bit vintage. Having a rough, film-looking texture and a very strong contrast, make the white parts a little over-exposed. I think this can create a moody vibe for the film, I will also use a low frame rate to shoot this, so when the camera moves, the lights will become blurry and change it’s shape, which looks very beautiful.

To make the film more complete, I will also have someone reading a poem about light and shadow as the sound of the video. So the video and sound will collaborate, and the film will be a visual representation of the poem. This will be the poem I use:

Where there is light, there is shadow,

A world inseparable,

wax and wane with the flow of moments,

Like waves in the open sea.

Where there is light, there is shadow,

Each a beauty in it’s own,

Do not search a world of light without shadows!

Try if you wish but you will not find it.

When you love the light in a person,

You also love the shadow in him,

Like a full moon,

It’s beauty will manifest in the darkness of the night,

and beautiful soft shadows thus formed by it’s golden light.

Comparing to the last project, I think this one will be more artistic, but also more simple. It doesn’t have that much different elements, I will only focus on the meaning and relationship between light and shadow.
