In assessment 2, I have gained a lot of knowledge and experience during the shooting and editing process. During my previous 3 semesters in university, I have been highly focused on photography, thus I paid less attention on video making. For this assessment we had to collaborate with group members and help each other finish their videos, just like a professional film crew. It is completely new to me because I always prefer to work alone so I can let all of my inspiration out and not care about what others think. This time, I will have to adapt to this new field to me.
Since the video is about a dialogue, we decided to intimate a scene from the movie “The Sixth Sense”. The first two problems I had were finding the actors and lighting. Luckily my group members were able to find the actor and actress so I didn’t need to worry about it, but the filming process got me a little confused. It was the first time for me to use a Sony film camera, the focusing exposure and settings all seems so new to me. We also tried different lightings to get the best look possible. It took some time for us to find the right lighting and composition but we are happy with the experience and I really appreciate the help from my group members.
After the shooting we still found some problems. We didn’t pay enough attention to the reflection of light panels, so in one of the scenes we could see the light panel on the actor’s glasses and it just ruined it. The other problem was the sound of the videos, the microphone we used was not able to get the sounds clean, and because I forgot to bring my microphone we couldn’t fix the problem. Both of these problems have taught me to be more careful with when we are shooting the videos and be perfectly prepared before the shooting so we can get the best quality.
This is a piece of valuable experience to me, and I consider it pretty good as my first time shooting a narrative film in a group. I have learned more knowledge about lighting, using film camera and working as a group. All of this will help me in the future of film making.
