After the taking a few photos I critically looked at them and noticed room for improvement for one of the photos and other objects I can look at. I also listened to the feedbacks I received in the consultation and decided to look at two items I use very often in my life, speakers and cloths.
Most speakers have holes or a cover on the sound units. It is very common that I never paid any attention to it. However this time I noticed an interesting texture on the holes on my speaker. When I look at it closely my eyes will notice some lines formed by the crowded holes, so I decided to take a photo of it.
For the cloth photo I just chose a new pair of pants I bought and started noticing details on it. I noticed the stitches on it is very wide and the threads used on it is also very thick and wide, they made the stitches very visible which is worth taking a photo in my opinion. Because normally when people look at a piece of garment, they will probably look at the color, shape, fabric or the prints and patterns on it, but stitches is what puts pieces of fabrics into a whole cloth. Stitches are always there but are not noticed by many people. That makes it something I want to show my audience.
Last time I took a photo of my lamp and the lighting condition didn’t meet my own expectation and I think it didn’t fit into my photo series too well. So this time I changed the lighting and used my macro lens to take a very close-up shot on the spring on my lamp. The big aperture gave the photo a shallow depth of field and brought in a lot of abstraction in the photo.
The metal spring reflected the light very well and the blurry background perfectly combined with the curve of the spring and made the reflection of the light become an important element in the photo. The light reflection is actually colorfully in the photo and I didn’t notice that until I put the photo on a computer screen. The colors and the other “black and white” parts of the photo created a strong contrast and added some extra elements in the photo. I’m very impressed with this photo and the visual effect of it is so much better than the previous one.
Here are my other 6 photos in the series:
During the class I had a discussion with my tutor and classmates about “should I make my photos black and white?” I had this thought in my mind because I want some of the photos to show texture more clearly and make it colorless will make sure the texture is the main thing in the photo and there are not too much elements in the photo. Making the photo black and white will make the purpose of the photos more clearly. But Hannah told me it will be unnecessary because the photos are already very “black and white” and having just a little bit of color will improve the visual effect. Since the theme of my project is “Finding the beauty of your everyday lives” it will be better if the photos are still realistic, making it colorless will be off topic because people are not living in a colorless world, things they see in their daily lives will not be in black and white. So I decided to keep the colors in the photos and I’m happy with the result. My photos are mainly in black, white and grey, those tiny bits of other colors creates contrast in the photos, especially the colorful reflection of light in the lamp photo.
