This video “The Encounter” is an experimental long shot video we did during week 6’s workshop. We worked in a group of three and filmed this video with a theme of “misunderstanding”.

The scene we chose to film is a very common misunderstanding that happened to most of us. When you saw someone waving at you but he or she was actually waving to the person behind you. I was the photographer following behind Matilda into the study area and I went around her as she waves to her friend. I think I did a good job for this part of the video, I held the camera steady, kept the right distance between me and her so the video can look smooth. When I moved back behind her, there were two people waving back, one was her friend and the other one though she was waving at her but she was actually waving to her friend sitting behind her. However, the scene showing she went to hug her friend did not show a clear facial expression of the person siting in front because the shot was too wide angled. Luckily, the last medium close-up shot helped showing the awkwardness and the facial expression.

Over all it was a successful try-out, everything went really smooth and didn’t take us too long the plan the thing out and film it. This workshop helped me gaining a lot of knowledge about long shot videos and how to make one on my own. It was great fun trying new types of video and learning new skills.
