During the week 5 workshop, we did a interview practice with a Sony MC50 camera. However, we encountered quite a few problems during the filming process.

We did this as a group of 3. None of us has done an interview before, no matter as an interviewer or an interviewee. So the first thing came in our way was how to ask the question and how to do the framing. The video requires a medium shot and a medium close-up shot for each interviewee, but I didn’t manage to film both shots at the first time. So I had to ask another question to get more information out of them and film with a different perspective. The question I asked was “How do u feel about your first few weeks of university?” Maybe it wasn’t a great leading question because it felt like I didn’t get enough information out of my interviewees and the conversation didn’t feel natural enough. This is the part I definitely have to improve next time.

Another problem was the quality of audio. We only had an hour to film, so we couldn’t find a decent and quiet place to do the interview, filming outside made the audio a bit noisy and full of background noise. This part is easy to avoid, all I need to do is find a suitable place for my interview.

Luckily I’ve done photography for quite some time now, I didn’t take me to long to get familiar with this camera, after a few tryouts, we managed to film the medium shots and medium close-up shots successfully. As a practice piece, I’m quite satisfied with what we did in such a hurry. Especially we filmed outside on the streets. The framing, cutaways, action and wide-angle shots were quite good. For project brief 3 I would need to improve the questions I ask and the quality of audio.
