Week 2: Media 1 Lectorial

In our second Media 1 Lectorial we had an introduction about editing and what it really means.

What stuck out to me the most was the ideas and links to people who have investigated editing such as Edward Dmytryk and Walter Murch. I did media as a subject in my last 2 years of high school but never thought about the idea of making a cut without a positive reason. Sometimes when making clips or videos you want to include as much content as possible to ‘fill it up’- but what I have come to terms with is that there is no point including irrelevant clips just to fill the video and all of it needs to have importance and a ‘positive’ reason. This statement was made by Edward Dmytryk, which I feel is a very important statement to keep in consideration when it comes to making inciting videos for consumers.

The second point through out this presentation that took my interest was about emotion and that does the specifc cut you are making reveal what the audience sound be feeling at that moment? This point also made me think deeper into the idea of editing techniques because without the right editing skills and making a film just ‘work’ it is hard to get the audience to feel what the director/creator wants them to feel. I believe this places a huge part in editing because you need to find the most obvious way possible to make the viewer feel the way they should about what is being shown to them.
