Copyright.

A whole world of scary infringement  notices, legalities and the possibilities of convictions and fines.  Any time we have a lecture relating to copyright it scares me away from using anyone’s work but my own.  Ever.  But I think the whole point of the internet is to share, communicate and reproduce each others’ work – presuming you have followed all the correct licensing and attribution laws.  This lectorial was very insightful and I think very useful to all of us in this course.  Media is such a digitally based course so we do need to be very savvy in regards to copyright laws.

I felt that there may have been an issue with copyright within my blog through the use of giphs however, through embedding these giphs I have created a link between ‘Giphy’ the giph website and my own blog so the original creator can be found.  In terms of giphs including video footage of ‘The Simpsons’ for example, I feel that I have used this as promotion for the television show therefore am not infringing any copyright law.  It is a fine line between legal and illegal but I think that the majority of the internet moves along this thin line.

As well as all of this, I am also curious about copyrighting ideas.  So, you can’t copyright your ideas, but once you have written them down and created a storyboard of these your ‘idea’ has been copyrighted.  It seems like a complex little world of ownership.

No doubt throughout the coming years of this course we will better understand copyright.  For now, let’s hope that none of us have breached copyright laws.
